Noteworthy as Italian Vogue’s 2008 all-black issue may have been, it was not the first magazine to celebrate dark-skinned models. In 1969, Life released an issue that read “Black Models Take Center Stage” on the cover, with a close-up of Naomi Sims, the first black model to gain worldwide recognition. It’s a distinction the Mississippi-native had fought hard for—hiring her own photographer and sending out handmade comp cards when told by agencies two years earlier that there was no work for black women. Sims went on to walk for Halston and appear on the cover of Cosmopolitan, Interview, and The New York Times’ fashion supplement, before bowing out in 1973 to start her own highly successful beauty business. We are sad to hear of Sims’s tragic passing this week breast cancer. She will be remembered for her bravura spirit and trailblazing fashion achievements.
