Skimming the cream from the over-the-top aspects of both street and formal-wear, Michael Michalsky has become a German red-carpet favorite. In Berlin, where most local talent is poor and sexy but earnest, Michalsky is a grand spinner of sexed-up, fantasy-worthy fashion. If George Michael were to re-make his Freedom video using German talent, only Michalsky would have the chops to contribute the costumes.

Yet during Mercedes Benz Berlin Fashion week, Michalsky presented a show in Friedrichstadtpalast that was grounded in unglamorous reality. On the stage where The Producers currently runs, the Hamburg-born, Berlin-based designer sent out male and female models in opulent looks with ironic references to the depression.

The models all wore fizzed hair and nude makeup, but some were in sumptuous dresses, including one white billowing ball gown printed in a the gold loan statement pattern (which matched the show’s invitation). Others sported a leaner look of flowered dresses reminiscent of struggling forties homemakers. And the men wore hooded jackets, oversized cardigans, and gleaming sneakers. Whatever hard-times anxiety the collection was supposed to channel, it was all dissipated by the show’s after-party—a booming distraction radiating goodwill for Berlin’s fashion community and admiration from the local media, who was delighted by the abundance of famous faces.

Take Jay-Z, for example, who just threw out “Run This Town”, the new single off Blueprint 3 featuring none other than Kanye West. Well guess what, Big Homie? Lil bro here fucked around and murdered you on your own shit!

Where did this girl come from?
